Residential > Senior/Low Income Housing

Low income housing is provided by Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. Saskatchewan Housing Corporation provides funding for a number of ongoing and new housing programs and services for low to moderate income households who could not otherwise afford them. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation contributes to the funding for most of the programs. Local municipalities also contribute to the funding for some programs.

Affordable Housing Rental Program

The Affordable Housing Rentals program helps make it possible for moderate income seniors to access suitable rental accommodations. An operating subsidy is available for the property owner in order to keep rents at the low end of the market or at break-even levels. Applicants may have to meet certain entrance requirements that vary according to the type of housing.

Social Housing Rental Program

This program provides rental accommodation for seniors in more than 280 communities throughout the province. Some units are suitable for persons with disabilities. The rental units are managed through local housing authorities, non-profit organizations and Aboriginal non-profits.

Available units are allocated to applicants on the basis of the greatest need, taking into account their age, number of dependents, existing shelter conditions and existing shelter costs. Rents are established using a rent-geared-to-income (RGI) scale which sets rents based on a percentage of gross household income. Some buildings are designed to offer a combination of housing and services to help individuals 60 years of age and older maintain their independence.
